Content model, content strategy, and templates

National UK charity

Development of content model, taxonomy, information architecture and template structure, which transformed the user experience of a complex and hard-to-navigate website.

The problem to solve

Reorganising a site containing over 24,000 pages of content, which users found both unengaging and hard to navigate, failed to communicate strategic messaging, and whose maintenance was overly time-consuming.

Process

Creating a better content experience started with deconstructing the content, reconfiguring it as in a structure of attributes, data, and relationships. This enabled the development of a content model, site structure, and page templates.

Content types and taxonomy

Content types and taxonomy

The existing content was audited, card sorted and organised, enabling the creation of a taxonomy of types, with associated attributes.

Content model

Content model

Organising content into components, each with attributes and data, enabled content to be separated from layout. This framework allows content to be delivered in a format that is suited to its context - publish once, access from anywhere.

Content buckets

Content buckets

Organising content to match users mental models enabled a structure with clear categorisation to replace the one big bucket which existed previously.

Content meta

Content meta

Creating organisational rules - categories, filters, tags and relationships with other content - enabled articles of a type to have a singular home, and for duplicate content to be removed.

Content pillars, information architecture, and navigation

Content pillars, IA, & navigation

Card sorting subjects enabled draft content pillars, IA, and navigation to be proposed. Workshop sessions, with colleagues and stakeholders, developed these into candidates user testing.

Atomic components

Atomic components

Components - designed in accordance with atomic design principles - align with the content model. These enable content to be served up in a format that is suitable for the context.

Page templates

Page templates

Assembled from components, the page templates are structured so as to provide a narrative down the page. They guide users towards task completion, while still allowing browsing between buckets and pillars.
